Kenya Safari 2012

My wife and I have always had a close and personal connection with Africa. Monika spent her early years in Cape Town before her family migrated to Australia, and my own love of Africa comes from spending most of the ‘90s working for an agricultural company in Nairobi. So, in October 2010, we travelled to South Africa and Kenya to revisit some of the places we remembered from those earlier times. It was a wonderful and fulfilling experience for us both.

On our return to the Gold Coast with numerous photographs and stories of our adventures, quite a few of our friends expressed their own desire to go on safari in Africa, but said they were reluctant to do so on their own, or in a large, impersonal tour group. As a result of their interest, we put together a 13-day safari to Kenya, which took place in October last year.

The 2011 trip proved so successful that we were subsequently approached by many more of our friends and acquaintances to organise further tours. This led to the creation of SafariKenya, our own licensed and registered travel agency, with membership in the travel industry’s Travel Compensation Fund. Our aim is to provide our fellow travellers with the best possible safari experience, with carefully selected itineraries, authentic safari vehicles, luxury tented accommodation and top-quality catering.

Our 2012 African Safaris will take place between July and October 2012 and the actual dates have now been set. They will commence in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and coincide with the annual Great Migration of animals across the plains from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. We will be spending time in various significant game parks such as the Masai Mara, as well as Amboseli, which lies at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, and Tsavo East National Park.

Our initial accommodation in Nairobi will be at an iconic residential Club, of which I am a member. On safari, the emphasis will be on luxury tented camps that only cater for small, select groups. We will be using two modified Safari Landcruisers with pop-up tops that allow for optimum game viewing and photography. Even though each Landcruiser is a seven-seat vehicle, I am limiting the group to 10 people (plus myself) to ensure that everybody has plenty of space as we travel around.

Many of the arrangements will be identical to those of the 2011 Safari, but we have added a few extra highlights to this year’s tours to make them even more compelling. We have also removed the air travel component from the total price because a number of guests want to use frequent-flyer points or their airline concessions to pay for flights. We have therefore made this a ‘Nairobi to Nairobi’ Safari — in other words, land content only. As with last year’s trip, each 13-day Safari will include all accommodation, all land travel expenses and entrance fees, and most meals. Emirates are currently offering a return ticket to Nairobi for less than $1,800.

Final costs have now been confirmed with our operators in Kenya and the price per head, twin share, is Au$7,500 (GST does not apply). This price will be guaranteed, regardless of currency fluctuations, if the full amount is paid at the time of booking.
